My 6 year old pug,Pug Boy. had a stroke two weeks ago. He is paralized on his right side. At first, both his back legs weren't working but now he is able to stand up although it is very shaky. He can sit himself up too. The other night he got up and sorta walked. He looked like a drunk little pug but he did move forward. Pug Boy has a strong will and isn't going to give up. The Vet is amazed he is recovering so well. I just know God is healing my little pug. I am very concerned though about his front right leg because it just isn't working. He can't move it at all. He can feel in it though when we pinch his toes so I believe that is a good sign. I am thankful he does has control over his bladder and bowels. At first, he didn't and we had to have him lay on a pad with a diaper under him. Anyway, My questions are this...has anyone gone through a similar situation and had their pug recover? Also, do you think physical therapy with water therapy be a good idea? Our Vet told us just to exercise his legs throughout the day but I want to give Pug Boy the best chance possible to get over this stroke. Oh, the Vet doesn't believe this was PDE. I believe mainly because of his age. Anyway, any help or advice would be most helpful.

So glad your vet says not PDE-- that's the number one fear of all pug-owners I believe. I've never been through it, but water therapy can be very useful for lots of different things. If you decide to take him make sure he's introduced gradually to the water. Atilla has been swimming at doggie day camp and they were good about easing him in to the shallow water first. He still didn't like it, but he didn't panic. I hope your little man makes a full recovery. I'm not medical at all, but I have heard that feeling in the toes is a good sign.

So sorry you and your puggie are going through this. I haven't been in this situation and don't ever want to be.....but would a doggie chiropractor be able to help? I wish your Pug Boy a speedy and full recovery.

Dirty has a shattered front leg with complete radial nerve damage. Her's is from a car hitting her. Before I started working with her she had no use at all of her leg. Since it is shattered she'll never be able to use it to walk. I did water therapy with her (now keep in mind this was started a year after she was hurt) and she has gotten so much stronger than she was to begin with. I still do range of motion exercises with her and everything as well. And she is able to use it to play and swat at things, she smacks at Zoe with it and has more motion. I would recommend the water therapy if your little feller does ok being around water. In my personal opinion it helped Dirty enormously, but she wasnt a stroke victim either, but I would at least try it.

I'm sure the mental stimulation from the exercising and your working with him wouldn't be such a horrible thing, as long as he isn't in some sort of physical pain.

Definitely ask your vet about physical therapy. Depending on your location, you may be able to find an animal rehab center. Everything from the underwater treadmill to different exercises that you can do at home. If you can afford it, I would absolutely do it.
