MY pug Otis is almost 12 years old and has just started hacking and throwing up the white thick slimy stuff. He is an indoor dog that is not around other animals.  His teeth are kinda bad due to the fact he was my brothers dog for 9 yrs and my brother nerver got him dental care.  I dont know what to do about this.  I give him dry food but i put water in it before i give it to him.  He really doesnt chew too much, he just swallows food whole.  Can anyone help?

You do want to get him to the vet soon. Dental disease can lead to worse things like infections and kidney problems. He may not be chewing because his teeth hurt.

Hacking up stuff isn't good either. Coughing can be a symptom of lots of problems.

Let us know what the vet says.

Is he coughing up stuff all the time? First thing in the morning? After eating?

If it's first thing in the morning, it could be gastric reflux. Try giving him a little food last thing at night and see if that helps.

My experience with coughing is limited to one case of kennel cough. One of my girls Tallulah had it, coughed and hacked so hard that she regurgitated her food and water. I used a homeopathic children's cough syrup so that she could keep her food and water down.

Are you sure that it's coughing and not vomiting?

Well otis's vet said she thinks its kennel cough. If not it could be his trachial? tube/esophogus collapsing or cancer. She started antibiotics. Hopefully they will work.
